Edgecombe County is about one hour’s drive east of Raleigh. This predominantly rural and agricultural region is known for the Battle Park in Rocky Mount, the Coolmore antebellum mansion, and the Rocky Mount Arts Center. Modern Edgecombe County has resources for the advanced manufacturing industry. Rocky Mount is the county’s largest municipality and is home to its community college.

Nash County is slightly further from Raleigh but offers a similar lifestyle to the North Carolina Triangle. Throughout the county are small towns with lots of charm and history. Rocky Mount is one of the more significant towns in Nash County.

The US Census counted 54,341 residents of Rocky Mount in the April 2020 census. That was actually fewer than April 2010. The city lost just over 3,000 residents. Both Edgecombe County and Nash County recorded resident losses.

Rocky Mount is trying to turn the tide by working on redevelopment projects and reaching out to new employers. New industry is coming into the area with China-based Triangle Tire and Corning’s distribution center. 

The state of North Carolina predicts that Edgecombe will lose about 8% of its residents by 2030. Nash County is predicted to gain 3% in population, or a total of 3,257 residents, in that same time frame. 

What neighborhoods are in Rocky Mount, NC?

Oakwood is an established suburban neighborhood with small to mid-sized single-family homes. Many homes were built between 1970 and 1999. It’s close to lifestyle amenities like grocery stores, clinics, end repair shops. Two elementary schools are available nearby.

Meadowbrook has mid-century to new construction homes in a wooded area. In the community’s center is Meadowbrook Park, which has a picnic pavilion and a children’s playground.

Swelton Heights is northwest of the city center. It is a well-established neighborhood with convenient access to Highway 301 and Highway 64. Nash General Hospital is nearby.

Woodgreen is made up of single-family homes and some local businesses. It’s a short drive to reach the local restaurants, schools, and retailers. 

Halifax Crossing and Berkeley are two of the higher-priced neighborhoods in Rocky Mount. It is an established neighborhood with construction dating back to the 1970s. Homes are predominately medium in size, from three to five or more bedrooms. 

The Beaver Pond community is surrounded by shopping, retail stores, and a recreational park. It is a mixture of midsize single-family homes. 

West Haven is a historic district with family attractions and activities surrounding City Lake and West Haven parks. It has a small-town feel, and the neighbors often throw events such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas luminaries, and a block party. 

Are there any waterfront properties found in Rocky Mount, NC? 

The Tar river runs through the center of Rocky Mount. Several other creeks and branches drain into the Tar River through Rocky Mount. This means that you can find riverfront properties inside the town. In the January 2022 real estate market, 19 properties had some form of waterfront. Some of these included undeveloped lots in and around Rocky Mount.

Players living in Rocky Mount have three golf courses to choose from. You have the Benvenue Country Club, North Green Country Club, and Belmont Lakes Preserve. 

Benvenue Country Club was established in 1922 and designed by Donald Ross. It has men’s and women’s golf associations and a golf shop. 

Northgreen Country Club has a course rating of 74. Bob Toski designed the course, which opened in 1974.

The Belmont Lake Golf Club is the newest course in the area. David Johnson Golf Design created the challenging course with Champion Bermuda grass.

Belmont Lake Preserve is a 1,400-acre master-planned community named in 2015 as one of the top places to retire. It has custom-built and development-style new construction single-family homes and townhomes. The community amenities include an 80-acre lake, a clubhouse with two saltwater pools, a fitness center, a billiards room, and more. As of 2022, many new construction homes and undeveloped lots were available. 

What areas are near Rocky Mount, NC?

Rocky Mount is the epicenter of Edgecombe and Nash Counties, but when you’re looking to get away and explore the surrounding area, you’re in a great location. 

Immediately to the northeast are the towns of Dortches and Red Oak. The small towns have charming downtown centers to explore. 

Tar River flows through Rocky Mountain into the Tar River Reservoir just southwest of the city. Numerous boat ramps are available along the reservoir if you’re looking for a day out on the water boating or fishing. 

About an hour east lies the state capital of Raleigh. It’s here you’ll find urban amenities, such as universities, expansive healthcare, touring music Acts, and other entertainment possibilities. 

By following US-64, you can be near the North Carolina Outer Banks and just over two hours. The beautiful drive will take you near the Albemarle Sound to destinations like Kitty Hawk.
